Career Changes

If you have considered going back to school then you have come to a crossroads and found that something may be incomplete.  Perhaps you have considered school a few times but never made that big leap back into the classroom.   There is a lot to consider when deciding if this journey will be one that will be beneficial in your life.

We have compiled a comprehensive list of considerations before you enroll.

1. Know how you will support yourself for the longest duration to complete your degree or certificate.

2. Investigate all possible areas of interest for your studies and put together a list of degrees/completion certificates as they apply to each area of interest.

3. Research your top three degree programs to know the courses you will need to earn your degree or otherwise to insure you will still be interested in these degree programs.

4. Make sure the degree or certificate program is for a career or industry for which you are interested and is in high-demand.  It should be able to provide sufficient pay to ensure completing this program is worth your time and money.  You can do this by checking out local online job sites, job boards, college counselors and newspapers.  You may want to consider online courses available in your course requirements.

5. Tour the top three schools and speak with an admissions counselor to determine cost, degree programs, certificate programs, transfer credits (if applicable), grants, scholarships and housing if necessary.

6. Upon choosing the school, degree program and method of payment/grant/scholarship, contact any previous college or university and/or high school for official transcripts to be sent directly to your new school.  You should contact the admissions department of your new school to get the correct address where the transcripts should be sent and the cut off date.  You also need to determine if there are any entrance exams that need to be completed before enrollment at your new school.  You may be able to complete some of the applications online.  If attending a 2 year school such as a community college, make sure you speak with your future transfer school to ensure your credits will transfer based on your current plan.  Also, ask your guidance counselor if you need to apply for any programs (e.g. nursing) or with any education partners (e.g. nursing school) besides the one you plan to currently attend for your general education requirements.

7. Set an appointment with your financial aid department to discuss your qualifications for any grants or scholarships as they apply to your program and need.

8. Sit down with the admissions counselor to begin enrollment and pay the enrollment fee.  Make sure to have proper ID and any information related to any previous classes that may have already been completed towards this program from this school or any other.   Ask the admissions counselor if you can start to sign up for classes and meet with a guidance counselor to select the correct courses for the degree program of choice.  You will most likely need to pay for a portion of your tuition by a specific date to be sure you will remain on the class roster.

9. Upon signing up for classes, make sure you find out if the professor or teacher will require a text book, lab book or otherwise.  Purchase or rent books at recommended book store.  Do not go to class without the required texts or items your professor or teacher requires.

10.Make sure you have set-up, logged-in and maintained your passwords for college admissions, on-line classrooms, class portals, financial aid and otherwise.

While every school and university is different, this should give you a good start to a new education and bright new future!
