Herbs and spices are essential ingredients that can make bland food delicious and with less sodium, fat and calories.  There is no better way to prepare healthy meals than with added herbs and spice.  But did you know that some spices and herbs may have holistic qualities to improve health*?

Top 5 spices

Cinnamon

Antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties make this spice a must have for any kitchen.  It contains manganese, iron and calcium along with other essential minerals.  It helps in blood circulation and provides oxygen to cells of the human body.  This can help reduce pain and decrease recovery time.  This spice can be used in tea, desserts, as well as, in savory dishes.

Oregano

Containing both rosmarinic acid and thymol, antioxidants known to fight free radicals, oregano helps the immune system stay strong against chronic disease.  It has a robust, full flavor and is well known to flavor meat, mutton and lamb.

Cumin

A great deal of health benefits come from cumin as it is rich in vitamins and minerals.  It is known to support the digestive system and appetite.  Its aroma may activate the salivary glands to further aid in digestion.  It is also known to alleviate bloating associated with gas.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a perennial flowering plant.  Its scientific name is Curcuma longa of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae.  Its roots are commonly used in cooking and for teas.  It contains Bioactive Compounds with medicinal benefits such as natural anti-inflammatory affects.  Curcuma is thought to boost brain function by increasing levels of BDNF, a growth hormone that works against degenerative brain dysfunctions like Alzheimer's and depression.  It has further been linked to reduce the risk for heart disease, cancer and symptoms of arthritis.

Chamomile

Used as a natural sedative and an anxiolytic to aid in relaxation and stress reduction, Chamomile is commonly used as a tea or in a compress.  Chamomile has been evaluated by the FDA and generally considered safe but may increase drowsiness and/or interfere with the way the body works with other medications the individual may take.

*While these herbs and spices are natural, their safety and potential for side effects with or without use of other medications should not be assumed.  Instead, consult a physician prior to initiating supplemental intake for medicinal benefits.
