Featuring a new cocktail, its recipe and a brief history of the popular drink!

May 15, 2020 featured cocktail...

Directions:

Pour ice and water in a medium rocks serving glass.  Pour out ice water, add ice and pour in sweet and sour mix (Zing-Zang® is a popular brand) and one and one half shots of your favorite whiskey.   Add lemon wedge and cherry for a garnish.

Non-Alcoholic

Keep the above recipe but substitute two teaspoons of non-alcohol vanilla extract.

History

Wikipedia reports a Peruvian newspaper, El Comercio de lquique credited Elliott Stubb as the creator of the "whiskey sour" in the late 1800's in Chile.  However, like many drinks, there are multiple stories about where the simple, but popular drink originated.

An article on overcupbooks.com reports English, Vice Admiral Edward Vernon made the concoction as a water substitute and a way to protect his crew from scurvy, sea sickness and malnutrition.  The primary reason he added juice was to prevent his crew from getting intoxicated on straight alcohol.  His reported version included juice (lemon or lime) and Gin or Brandy.  While Americans changed the alcohol to Whiskey, the concept for the drink may have started with his version.

Last featured cocktail was the Margarita!

Next featured cocktail is the Cosmopolitan!

As always drink responsibly or try the non-alcoholic versions!
