History

'Official Cocktail of the Kentucky Derby'

This cocktail gained popularity in the Southern United States in the early 1800's.  However, it's origin actually goes back centuries to an Arab drink with a main ingredient, rose water.  It was thought to improve the lives of anyone who drank it.

Its delicate flavor was later replaced with a refreshing new ingredient, mint leaves originating from the Mediterranean.

Another story about the cocktail is that it was invented by a man who was getting water to add to his bourbon and found mint near the river and decided to add it to his drink.

The widest held belief of its U.S. origin is Virginia beau monde in the late 1700's.  It can be linked back to editorial written about it in the early 1800's in Virgina referring to a small drink with liquor and mint taken in the morning.  It was thought to have been prescribed in the early to mid 1780's for stomach aches and swallowing issues.

Lending credence to its invigorating taste, the most interesting reaction to the cocktail came from Hemingway who was said to have thrown his glass against the wall after drinking the Mint Julep!

Politician's Henry Clay (United States Senator) and Teddy Roosevelt continued to bring attention to this invigorating cocktail that eventually was named as the Kentucky Derby's official drink in 1983.
