It gives us a chance to meet new people & develop a sense of accomplishment, community and purpose.  Volunteering further provides tremendous help for groups, churches and individuals in our city, across the nation and around the world.

How to get started as a volunteer

We put together a short list of organizations that are seeking volunteers.   While we can't list every organization that needs volunteers; we have provided ideas for independent volunteering, a volunteer matching service and types of groups within your own community that need your help.  If you know of an organization that is seeking volunteers, we'd love to hear from you. Animal Shelter Organizations and Adoption Centers - Assistance raising money, administrative help, caring for pets and maintaining the shelters directly (BestFriends.org, ASPCA.org/take-action/volunteer and Petfinder.com/helping-pets) -

Red Cross -Support for blood donations, delivering services to local communities, work-from-home opportunities and more.  Search for various types of Red Cross volunteer opportunities.  Urgently needed volunteer opportunities also available.  

Food Pantries - Organizing food drives, raising money or food distribution  (Foodpantries.org and Operationfoodsearch.org are great sites to check out.) -

National Parks - There are numerous opportunities available. Access more information through the National Park Service at nps.gov/getinvolved.

Local Hospitals - Patient sitting, administrative help and greeters Search local hospital's/volunteering opportunities in your area for more information.

Doctors Without Borders - Donations accepted, fundraising and volunteer opportunities available.  Checkout doctorswithoutborders.org for details.

Habitat for Humanity - Home repair, maintenance or home building.  Check out the Women Build Program to assist women in learning construction skills.

Hospice - Patient assistance at the end of life, spiritual care, bereavement duties (Vitas Healthcare at vitas.com has volunteer opportunities in numerous states) -

Schools and Libraries - Administrative duties, raising money, organizing fund raisers such as book fairs, assistance at school events and sporting activities -

Volunteer Matching Service - This site matches local organizations with volunteers like you. Go to volunteermatch.org and list your city to locate volunteer opportunities near you.

AARP - Create the Good Volunteer Opportunities to include at-home opportunities available.  Go to createthegood.aarp.org or their volunteer search page for opportunities.
