Reality star and social media mogul, Kim Kardashian, 40 filed for divorce in February from husband Kanye West, 43 in Los Angeles, after nearly 7 years of marriage.

She is represented by well-known attorney, Laura Wasser.   Wasser has established herself as a "divorce attorney of celebrities", formerly representing celebs like Kelly Clarkson, Heidi Klum and Angelina Jolie. She represented Kardashian in her divorce from second husband, professional basketball player, Kris Humphries in 2013.  Kardashian and Humphries were married approximately 2 years.

In a legal response to the filing, West requested joint legal and physical custody of the couples four children, daughters, North, 7 & Chicago 3 and sons Saint, 5 & Psalm, almost 2.  So far, Kardashian indicates she want's West in their children's lives and has indicated she thinks he is a good father.

The couple was married in a lavish, Kardashian style wedding in Italy in 2014.  They were together a total of 8 years.  Between political drama and typical celebrity interest, the couple has remained on the forefront of celebrity gossip since they met.

It is however a seemingly private divorce as much of the specifics, not already reported or discussed on social media, have yet to be released.

News organizations including Yahoo Entertainment,  People and MSN Entertainment are reporting sources close to Kim indicate that filing for divorce has relieved a difficult period of time for the couple and that Kim has been significantly happier since the legal dissolution has commenced.

She has already been seen in Miami with friends taking some time getting back into a single lifestyle.

Separation and counseling failed

The couple reportedly tried counseling during their separation to keep their family together.   Once that failed, Kanye prepared himself for next step of Kardashian filing for divorce.

According to reports in early January on the Today Show, the couple had been separated since October, 2020.  The report went on to indicate that following West's failed bid for presidency, West made several accusations on Twitter® about Kardashian and [her] possible plans to have him hospitalized.  The tweets have since been deleted.

Later Kardashian released a compassionate statement on her Instagram® story regarding his behavior indicating her feeling of powerlessness over his getting help.  "As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder.  Anyone who has this or a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand.  Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor.  People who are unaware or far removed from this experience can be judgmental and not understand that the individual themselves have to engage in the process of getting help no matter how hard family and friends try."

A year of changes

This has been a "finality year" for Kim in that, in addition to her marriage with West ending, the 20th season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians will be the last.  The successful show has been an ongoing reality saga that fans around the world have embraced, year after year.  It has been a significant platform for Kim, sisters and mom to grow their multi-billion dollar empire.  Careers and businesses for all members of the family and those lucky enough to be close to them have blossomed over the years.  Relationships, marriages and friendships have come and gone along the way and the show continued to attract "reality drama seekers" year after year.

Staying in Hidden Hills Mansion

Since the filing, Kim and the the couple's four children continue to live in the Hidden Hills mansion formerly shared with West.  She plans to remain in the home and reports on MSN Entertainment indicate the couple wants to do everything possible to ensure the divorce causes the least amount of stress possible for their children.

Third marriage ending for Kardashian

Kim was married two times prior to her marriage with West, but her marriage to West is the only one that included children.  West was never married prior to his marriage with Kardashian.

This marriage's longevity and possibility for success are typical of a typical American marriage

It's not uncommon for those who have been divorced two times to also suffer a failed third marriage.  Current statistics of those who enter into a third marriage in America indicate a 27% chance of success.

The average U.S. marriage typically lasts approximately 8 years.  It's quite possible that the time it takes to negotiate and process this divorce, Kardashian and West will be nearing 8 years of marriage.
