Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes.  Many of us like it because it provides a great accent to a fine meal, helps us chill out after a long day and has a flavor specific to it's region of origin, winery and grapes.  But there are many facts that are interesting to know when enjoying this aromatic beverage.  Some are fun facts and others are just like...."What?  Really?".  Take a sip.

Wine Fact #1  Good for you

Drinking red wine is known to lower the chance of stroke compared to those who do not drink it.  It has also been linked to lessoning the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Wine Fact #2  Less guilt

Wine has no cholesterol or fat.

Wine Fact #3  Wine better than juice

You would have to drink 20 glasses of apple juice or orange juice to get the same antioxidants from a glass of red wine.  The antioxidants are the major contributors to the health benefits of red wine.

Wine Fact #4  Husbands could kill for it

In the early Roman times, husbands were allowed to kill their wives if they drank wine since it was forbidden for women to do so.

Wine Fact #5  California makes lots of vino

Known as the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, California produces almost as much wine as France, Spain and Italy.

Wine Fact #6  A toast to health or assurance that it's not poison?

The Greeks started the "drinking to one's health" as the host would take the first sip to assure the wine provided at the table was not poison.

Wine Fact #7  Tannins.  Good or bad?

Tannins are found largely in wine, juices and ciders.  They generally add a dry, bitter taste to most wines which some feel adds the primary flavor.  A dry wine does not necessarily mean it is high in tannins, however.

They occur naturally in plants and wine grapes.  Wine tannins are mostly water-soluble polyphenols. Tannins are useful to the body and are known to have antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic and antimicrobial qualities.  But they do also have negative affects that may affect some people more than others.  They are known to have anti-nutritional qualities and can hinder proper digestion and metabolic processes.  They can obstruct the absorption of iron which can lead to anemia, lethargy or other health problems.  If you prefer less bitterness or have indigestion or headaches following common drinks like coffee, red wine or tea you may want to try a wine with less tannins.

Wine Fact #8  White or red with a meal?

Red wine like a Cabernet usually pairs well with red meat while white wine like Chardonnay usually pairs well with fish or chicken.  Dessert wine should usually be a sweet wine.  

Wine Fact #9  To swirl or not to swirl?

Fill your glass a third full and swirl away.  This releases the abundance of aromas within the wine.  This adds to the overall flavor and experience of the wine.

There are four main types of wine.  White, Red, Sparkling and Rose.

White wine - Riesling, chardonnay, pinot grigio, chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, moscato

Red wine - Cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, merlot, syrah/shiraz

Sparking - Champagne, cava, prosecco or pe't-nat
