Featuring a new cocktail, its recipe and a brief history of the popular drink!

February 7, 2020 featured cocktail...

Directions:

Pour ice and water in tall serving glass and prepare ingredients in shaker. Shake ingredients with ice, pour ice water out of serving glass and muddle mint leaves and lime portion (to taste) in glass before adding shaken ingredients (muddle is a fancy word for using a spoon or muddler to smash and goosh mint leaves and lime at the bottom of the glass to bring out the oils and essence of both to flavor the drink). Garnish with remaining portion of lime and mint leaves with toothpick and/or umbrella and straw.

Non-Alcoholic

Keep the above recipe but substitute 7UP, ginger ale or iced tea in place of light rum. Lightly shake ingredients or stir (excluding 7UP) with ice, pour in chilled glass then top with 7UP and garnish.

History

This drink is thought to originate in Cuba and is still considered to be Cuba's national drink.  It is very popular with pirates and Caribbean Swashbucklers.  It's popularity is attributed to the creation of the Bacardi Company in the 1800s and since Earnest Hemingway recognized it as his favorite drink.

However, disputes of it's origin continue as it has history that goes back to the exploits of Sir Francis Drake, an English slave trader in the 1500s.  His crew was overcome with scurvy after winning the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1586.  They stopped in Havana for help and the locals supplied them with lime (which prevents scurvy), mint (good to reduce nausea) and rum (fermented sugarcane).  The locals then named this concoction El Draque after Sir Francis Drake, later called the Mojito. Since the main problem with this theory is that rum was undocumented until the 1620s, the drink may have had a some variation.  However, overall, it was likely that this was the beginning of this famous cocktail.

Next featured cocktail is the Pina Colada!

Last featured cocktail was the Bahama Mama!
