History

The Mai Tai is a famed cocktail that gained a great deal of notoriety when it was featured in the movie Blue Hawaii, starring Elvis Presley.  Still commonly served today it was most popular in restaurants and tiki bars in the 50's and 60's.  It's name is thought to originate from the word maita'i , Tahitian for "good" or "excellence".  It's usually spelled "Mai Tai" or "Mai-Tai".

The two most common accounts about the history of the Mai Tai, includes a restaurant owner, Victor J. Bergeron who claimed to invent the drink in 1944 at his restaurant in Oakland, California named Trader Vic's.  The restaurant/tiki bar was part of a chain of restaurants owned by Bergeron.

The only other claim to the invention of the Mai Tai was of Don Beach, a successful American businessman who owned the Hollywood, California tiki bar prototype in the 1930's named Don the Beachcomber.  Apparently, he claimed to invent the drink, but his claim was countered by a former colleague who said Beach's recipe for the Mai Tai was just based on his original Q.B. Cooler cocktail.  His Mai Tai recipe is actually far more complex than Bergeron's.

There are conflicting opinions about if either recipe actually tastes the same and which is the one that is actually the original Mai Tai recipe.  But, it's clear that this drink still continues to be a top selling summer cocktail in bars all over the world!  Like many drinks, it's possible that many newer versions have portions of both recipes.

Next featured cocktail is the Screwdriver!

Last featured cocktail was the Pina Colada!
