Featuring a cocktail, its recipe and brief history!

September 19, 2021 featured cocktail...

Directions:

Chill glass:

Rinse martini glass and place in freezer until ready to serve or fill glass with ice water while preparing cocktail.

Blended:

Pierce two large olives together with serving toothpick. (Optional: Remove pimento of olive and stuff blue cheese into the center of the olives before assembling.)  Set olives aside.  Pour vodka/gin and dry vermouth into a shaker with ice and shake or stir depending on taste.  Shaking the ingredients will have a more blended consistency and produce some fluffiness in the mixture. (Do not over-shake to avoid a cloudy cocktail which is generally considered improperly made.)

Pour water out of glass or remove chilled glass from freezer. Pour the olive juice into the glass while turning it in order to coat the inside of the glass.  The olive juice will naturally pool to the bottom of the glass. Drop olives into the glass.

Pour strained shaker contents into the glass to just above the rim.  It's important to not fill to the rim when serving in a martini glass as they spill very easily. Also, if carrying the glass to someone, pour the contents from the shaker when serving rather than carrying the filled glass to your guest.  Again, it's easy to spill and good vodka or gin isn't cheap.

What is a dry martini?  Little to no dry vermouth is considered a dry martini.

What makes a martini dirty?  The olive juice is the ingredient added to make a dirty martini.

What is the difference between a vodka martini and gin martini?  A gin martini is the more traditional version of the cocktail.  Vodka martinis have become more popular in recent years and have a great deal of trendy variations, such as the cosmopolitan and appletini.

Non-Alcoholic

Keep the above recipe but substitute Ritual Gin® for the gin or vodka and keep the rest of the recipe the same.

History

Like nearly all of our featured cocktails, the history of the martini and it's variations is a bit unclear, much like the dirty martini itself.

A widely accepted claim is that the cocktail originated following the creation of "Martini and Rossi" vermouth in the 1800's.  It was later abbreviated to the cocktail's most traditional name, the "Martini".

There are also claims that the cocktail originated in Martinez, California in the 1800's when a lucky gold miner wishing to celebrate his new fortune ordered champagne at a local tavern/bar which they didn't have on hand.  The bartender put something together with some of the same ingredients in today's gin martini.  It was later known as the "Martinez Special".

Still yet, there are others who believe the cocktail was first created in San Francisco or New York.

The cocktail has an image and is meant for a more "civilized" patron

Without a doubt, just ordering the cocktail makes one feel as if they are of a higher social substance.  Perhaps greats like Ernest Hemingway paved the way for the cocktail's popularity with the socialites or those that want to be considered as such.  His mention of the drink in A Farewell To Arms indicated his martini had a cool, clean finish and made him feel civilized.

Such an endorsement naturally could be a catalyst for the cocktail to be considered one of the most sophisticated cocktails in history.

Shaken or stirred

In addition to the swanky nature of the cocktail, pop culture increased the drinks incredible popularity.

James Bond's famous line regarding his cocktail of choice, the martini, "...shaken not stirred" may have been key to more requests in later years for shaken martinis rather than the more traditional variation where the drink is stirred during preparation.

However, martini connoisseurs insist the cocktail must never be shaken because it dilutes the drink, overchills it and causes it to lose the precise texture of the martini.   Over-shaking may also cause it to become what is termed "bruised" in that the bubbles and ice cause a cloudy drink, ruining its value in appearance and taste.

If it tastes like candy, we say shake it!

The more modern variations, especially those with vodka, are indeed shaken.  It's possible sweet variations and chocolate infusions have caused many of us to simply not give a hoot about the exact consistency of the traditional martini.

Last featured cocktail was the Strawberries and Cream Splash

As always drink responsibly or try the non-alcoholic versions!
