Featuring a cocktail, its recipe and brief history!

September 15, 2020 featured cocktail...

Directions:

Pour ice and water in medium size martini glass.  Pour about 1/4 cup of sugar onto a small saucer (at least the circumference of the top of the martini glass).  Using a paring knife or lemon peeler, cut a spiral lemon peel for the top of your cocktail.  Set aside.  In a cocktail shaker include 4 cubes of ice, vodka, triple sec and juice.  Shake, but don't over shake.  Just blend and chill your ingredients.  You don't want too many bubbles, but it should be ice cold.  Pour ice and water out of your martini glass, rub the lemon peel around the entire rim of the glass, then turn the glass upside down and dip the rim into the sugar.   Serve the glass with a napkin to your guest.  Pour ingredients into the chilled glass.  Twist the lemon peel then hinge onto the rim of the glass or drop the spiral lemon peel into the Cosmo as a garnish.

Non-Alcoholic

Keep the above recipe but substitute two teaspoons of non-alcohol vanilla extract & 1.5 oz. of 7UP® for vodka and 1 oz. pineapple juice for triple sec.

History

Common to most drink recipes, there are numerous claims to the invention of the Cosmopolitan, but the most legit goes back to Toby Cecchini, a bartender in Manhattan.  His claim to fame occurred when he created the drink at the celebrity infused bar, Odeon.  Once celebrities embraced the craft cocktail, it seemed to gain popularity in all the right crowds, eventually surfacing on, what may have brought the drink it's most significant notoriety, Sex and the City.  First ordered by Samantha, the already famous drink gained significant "girl power" favor and continued to be a popular cocktail both on and off the show.

It's simple ingredients and sexy style may have been responsible for the martini cocktail buzz across the nation that induced bartenders to put their "craft" into the craft cocktail business.  Martini and cocktail bars continued to produce their own version of the Cosmo along with various other "wanna be cocktails" with the same appeal.  The original restaurant, Odeon in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood has even discontinued serving the original version credited to Toby, unless requested.

While the drink may have a bad rap as a "shi shi frou frou" drink with serious craft cocktail crowds, it is what it is and craft cocktail crowds shouldn't be serious anyway!

We say keep the serious stuff for Macallan 18 Single Malt Whiskey, loosen it up with a cube of ice and let the rest of us sip our Cosmo from a safe distance while you secretly wish you were as sexy as us and we'll be thankful we aren't as serious as you!

Smooch!  ...with lots of sugar and a garnish on top!
