Featuring a cocktail, its recipe and brief history!

Directions:

Chill glass:

Rinse cocktail glass or tall rocks glass and place in freezer until ready to serve or fill glass with ice water while preparing cocktail.

Blended:

Place ice, lemonade, blue curacao, lemon juice and vodka in a blender.  Blend on high speed until finely pureed. Pour into glass and garnish with a lemon or orange wheel or wedge.  Can also pierce a cherry and lemon/orange wedge together, slice lemon/orange in middle then hinge on glass. 

Optional:  Blend the lemonade, lemon juice and ice first, pour in the bottom and then blend the vodka with blue curacao and pour on top of the frozen lemonade/lemon juice mixture.  Alcohol is denser than water/juice, that's why the lemonade/juice should be on the bottom of the two mixtures.  This will change the taste of the drink in how the mixture slowly mixes as you drink and it starts to melt.  Plus, it looks better!

How much ice: Put enough ice so that the liquid only reaches the top of the ice in the blender.  If the liquid is below the peak of the ice it will be too icy and if the ice is covered by the liquid, it will be too soupy.

Shaken:

This is the preferred and most popular way to drink this cocktail.  Chill your glass.  Pour the lemonade, lemon juice, vodka and blue curacao in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously.  Place ice in chilled glass and strain the contents from the shaker into the glass.

Non-Alcoholic

Keep the above recipe but substitute Hawaiian Punch Berry Blue Typhoon for the blue curacao and white grapefruit juice for vodka.

History 

The Blue Lagoon was created by Andy MacElhone at a bar named Harry's New York Bar in Paris, France in the 1960's.  The bar was owned by the well-known bartender Harry MacElhone, Andy's father.  The drink's tropically inspired, blue color was possibly a big reason it gained interest and remains a popular tropical cocktail today.  However, the famed bar was possibly another reason the drink took off since the bar's popularity attracted people from all over the world, making the bar a Parisian landmark.

The drink obviously predates the popular 1980 movie starring Brook Shields and Christopher Atkins, "The Blue Lagoon" (Rated R) about the survival and maturing of two children shipwrecked on a deserted island.  The movie pushed the envelope with critics for sexual content starring a minor.  It was was referred to by Robert Ebert as "the dumbest movie of the year", but still became a box office hit grossing over $58 million (9th highest earning movie in the United States, 1980).  The movie was remade in 1991, renamed "The Return of the Blue Lagoon" (PG-13) with Milla Jovovich playing the part formerly played by Brook Shields.  The movie again received similar controversial scrutiny.  

The drink may have been created before the movie, but the movie was created from a screenplay based on the novel also named "The Blue Lagoon" appearing first in 1908.  The first adaption of the novel was a British silent film in 1923.  Tropical inspired movies, publications and music continued to build fan fare through much of the 20th century lending more inspiration for the cocktail's creation and continued success.  

Let's just call it a Fruity, Tropical Cocktail!

So, it's possible the drink's name was derived from the novel, perhaps due to the novel's setting, which was the beautiful tropical island paradise in the South Pacific. 

However, blue curacao is a Caribbean liqueur and the cocktail then could be referred more accurately as a Caribbean inspired cocktail.  The Caribbean is actually a region inclusive of the Caribbean Sea, southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, and on the other side of Central America from the South Pacific.  However, both regions have islands considered tropical paradises and could easily be an inspiration for a great number of tropical cocktails and dishes.
